Privacy
We wrote this policy to explain, without legal padding, how Counter Character treats information about the people who use the character counter on counter-character.com. Everything below applies across the site, from the tool to the help articles.
Who we are
Counter Character is a free online character counter published at counter-character.com. The operator of the site is responsible for your information, and the quickest way to reach them is by email at [email protected]. Where data protection law uses the term “controller”, it refers to this operator.
What information is collected
You do not need to sign up to use the character counter: there are no accounts, logins or passwords on the site. The tool does its work locally, on your device, and its inputs and results are not uploaded to counter-character.com. Below we list the technical data that is collected through server logs, analytics and advertising, and why.
What the tool keeps locally
Your recent entries are saved in the browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back. Local storage is not transmitted with page requests, so the saved data never reaches our server. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings; a private window keeps nothing once it is closed.
About cookies
Like most websites, counter-character.com involves cookies and similar technologies, small pieces of data your browser keeps for a site. The tool works without cookies of its own; those that appear are set by the analytics and advertising partners listed below. Most browsers let you refuse or delete cookies, and doing so will not stop the character counter from working.
How we measure use of the site
To learn how visitors use counter-character.com, we rely on two analytics services: Yandex Metrica and Microsoft Clarity. These services record pages visited, time on page, the site you came from, device and browser type and an approximate location based on your IP address. Both include session recording and heatmaps that capture clicks, scrolls and pointer movements, helping us spot confusing parts of a page.
Yandex and Microsoft process this information under their own privacy policies, published on their websites. We look at the results in aggregate and do not use them to identify individual visitors.
Web server logs
Each time a page is requested, the web server writes an entry to its logs, as web servers normally do. They show which page was requested, when, from which IP address and with which browser (the user agent). They help us block abuse, fix problems and count traffic.
Advertising
We show advertising on counter-character.com to cover the cost of running the site. These ads come from third-party networks, which may set cookies and read device information such as your IP address and browser type to pick ads and measure results. Where permitted, networks may personalise ads using your browsing on other sites as well as this one.
Your tool inputs are never shared with ad networks, which process their own data under their own privacy terms. To limit ad personalisation, block third-party cookies in your browser or use the opt-out tools at optout.aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.
Our legal bases
Where the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies, processing relies on these grounds:
- Consent where the law requires it for analytics and advertising technologies.
- Legitimate interests in running a secure, working, ad-funded website, weighed against your rights.
- Providing the service you ask for, which covers the local storage that remembers your entries.
- Correspondence: emails you send are used only to respond to you.
Keeping data
Information is kept only while it serves its purpose; server logs are rotated out after a limited period unless they are needed to investigate misuse. Local storage keeps your entries until you clear the site's data. Emails you send us are kept as long as needed to deal with your message and any follow-up. Yandex, Microsoft and the ad networks apply their own retention periods.
Data transfers abroad
The services we use, including hosting, analytics and advertising providers, may process data in countries other than your own. The level of legal protection there may differ from that of your home country.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or erase the personal data we hold about you, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time. As there are no accounts, it helps if you tell us your IP address and roughly when you visited, so we can locate any relevant records. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular where you live or work. Write to [email protected] to make a request.
Notice for California residents
Under California law (the CCPA as amended by the CPRA), you may request to know and to delete or correct personal information about you, and you may opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell personal information in the everyday meaning of the word; no list of visitors is ever traded. That said, ad cookies used for personalised ads may be treated as “sharing” under California law. To opt out, enable Global Privacy Control in a browser that supports it, block third-party cookies in your browser settings, or email us. We will not treat you differently for exercising these rights.
Children's data
counter-character.com is not directed to children under 13, or under 16 where European rules apply. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Parents or guardians who think a child has contacted us can ask us to delete that information.
Keeping data safe
All pages on counter-character.com are delivered over an encrypted HTTPS connection. Only those who run the site can access the server and its logs. No system is perfectly secure; still, your tool inputs stay on your device.
